ระบบไฟฟ้ามีข้อกำหนดความปลอดภัยรวมตั้งแต่ แบตเตอรี่ อุปกรณ์ไฟฟ้า และระบบป้องกันไฟรั่ว ไฟเกิน ได้แก่
1) ตู้บรรจุแบตเตอรี่ เป็นแหล่งพลังงานของรถยกและถือว่าเป็นจุดสำคัญที่ต้องมีการป้องกัน ฝาตู้ที่เปิดต้องมีระดับห่างจากตัวแบตเตอรี่ไม่ต่ำกว่า 30 มิลลิเมตร เพื่อให้ไอระเหยของน้ำกรดที่ร้อนจัดสามารถระบายออกไปได้ และสามารถรับแรงกระแทกได้ไม่ต่ำกว่า 980 Nforce
2) Connector เป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญอีกตัวหนึ่งที่อาจใช้ในการตัดไฟจากแหล่งพลังงานเวลาฉุกเฉินได้ ต้องสามารถทนแรงไฟเป็น 4 เท่าของกำลังไฟปกติ ชนิดของ connector มีขนาดแยกตามสีต่างๆ ตามมาตรฐานสากล
3)อุปกรณ์ต่างๆ ต้องมีแนวนป้องกันไฟฟ้าช๊อต ต้องแยกห้องไฟฟ้าต่างหาก มีการป้องกันด้วยระบบลงดิน(earthing) มีวงจรพิเศษสำหรับระบายไฟจากการใช้ไฟเกิน (overload) และมีฟิวส์ (fuse) ขนาดเหมาะสมป้องกันไฟลัดวงจร
4) ต้องมีระบบสวิตช์ฉุกเฉิน (emergency disconnection) อยู่ใกล้มือคนขับที่พร้อมจะตัดไฟจากวงจรได้อย่างรวดเร็ว
5) ต้องมีระบบระบายความร้อนที่เกิดจากการทำงานของมอเตอร์
6) รถยกที่นำไปใช้งานในโรงงานหรือสายการผลิต ต้องคำนึงถึงการเข้ากันได้ของคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) หมายถึงการไม่ส่งคลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าไปรบกวนซึ่งกันและกันระหว่างรถยกไฟฟ้ากับเครื่องจักรกลอื่น ที่ควบคุมด้วยอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ซึ่งใช้งานอยู่ในบริเวณใกล้เคียง
ระบบควบคุมและเบรก (control & brake system)
สิ่งที่สำคัญในข้อกำหนดด้านนี้จะเกี่ยวข้องกับโครงสร้างต่างๆ และการควบคุมการขับเคลื่อนของตัวรถ ได้แก่
1.การกำหนดรัศมีวงเลี้ยวและขนาดกว้าง ยาว สูงของตัวรถชัดเจนและเหมาะสม สีรถต้องเป็นสีที่ตัดกันกับอุปกรณ์อื่นๆ ในสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ทำงาน เพื่อให้เห็นได้ชัดว่ารถยกกำลังทำงานหรือวิ่งไปมา ดังนั้น จึงได้พบเห็นเสมอว่ารถยกทั่วไปมีสีฉูดฉาดและสามารถมองเห็นได้แต่ไกล เช่น สีส้ม สีเหลือง สีแดง เป็นต้น
2.การควบคุมความเร็วในการขับเคลื่อน จะต้องมีความเร็วที่กำหนดเหมาะสม ไม่เร็วเกินไป มีความสามารถในการไต่ทางลาดชันและข้ามสิ่งกีดขวางได้ระดับหนึ่ง อุปกรณ์ที่บังคับเดินหน้าถอยหลังจะต้องสอดคล้องกับทิศทางเช่นเดียวกัน อุปกรณ์ที่บังคับเลี้ยงซ้ายขวาต้องมีลักษณะการทำงานสอดคล้องกับทิศทางการเลี้ยว
3.พวงมาลักที่ใช้จะต้องคืนตัวได้และสามารถบังคับด้วยมือเดียวได้ ดังนั้น พวงมาลัยรถยกจึงมีปุ่มเพิ่มขึ้น เพื่อให้บังคับทิศทางรถด้วยมือเพียงข้างเดียวได้สะดวก เหตุที่ต้องออกแบบเช่นนี้ เพราะรถยกต้องทำงานด้วยมือทั้งสองข้างพร้อมกันในขณะขับเคลื่อน เช่น ต้องมีมือเหลือที่จะยกงาขึ้นลง หรือโยกหน้าหลัง เป็นต้น
4.ระบบเบรกเป็นเงื่อนไขที่สำคัญอีกประการหนึ่ง รถยกจะมีเบรกหลายแบบ ซึ่งนอกจากการเบรกในเวลาทำงานที่เรียกว่า service brake แล้ว ยังมีระบเบรกในขณะที่รถจอดอยู่กับที่เรียกกันว่าเบรกอัตโนมัติ หรือ parking brake ช่วงป้องกันอันตรายจากการเคลื่อนตัวหรือลื่นไถลโดยไม่มีคนขับ
มาตราฐานที่ดีได้กำหนดน้ำหนักของเบรกที่จำเป็นของรถยกแต่ละรุ่น เพราะน้ำหนักตัวรถและความเร็วรถที่มีไม่เท่ากัน ทำให้ต้องมีน้ำหนักของเบรกเพียงพอกับรถชนิดนั้นๆ
5.รถยกประเภทเดินตามที่มีระยะหัว tiller ตั้งตรงกับนอนราบ ต้องมีระยะเบรกในตัวและยังต้องมีระบบเบรกชนิดพิเศษที่หัว tiller โดยคำนึงถึงรถเวลาถอยหลังมาหาคนขับ ถ้าบังเอิญคนขับถอยเข้าสู่มุมอับหรือติดกำแพง ระบบเบรกที่หัว tiller จะกระแทกกับคนขับ แล้วทำให้รถยกวิ่งกลับทิศทางได้ทันที เรียกว่า “reversing moving”
6.การวางตำแหน่งคานบังคับ ต้องเรียงตามที่กำหนดไว้ในมาตราฐาน กล่าวคือ ให้เรียงตามลำดับจาก A B C เพื่อช่วยให้คนขับรถยกสามารถบังคับรถได้ทุกคันเหมือนกันหมด และไม่เกิดความผิดพลาดในการบังคับ

How to Choose a Forklift. New and Used Forklift Sales Made Easy
There are six very important things that you need to consider before choosing a Forklift for your business, to ensure you get one that can handle your requirements without overspending.
Before you start looking at Forklift trucks or talking to dealers, you need to determine exactly what you need the Forklift to do. Here are 6 Vital questions you should answer before you start comparison shopping:
Forklift Sales 101
1: How heavy and what size are your typical loads?
It’s important to consider all loads which will need to be transported and carried now and in the not to distant future. Although generally you don’t want to purchase a Forklift with more capacity then you need (as higher capacity equals a higher purchase price), you need to allow for a lift capacity that will safely carry all loads on your site.
Also to be considered is how high loads need to be lifted as Forklift capacity reduces the higher we lift. As most standard forklifts are designed for carrying Australian sized 1200mm x 1200mm pallets, will the width of your loads require a special type of machine or attachment to be used? The load capacity will also affect the type and fuel type of Forklift needed.
ie: Loads of up to or greater than 2000kgs will usually rule out the use of electric forklifts.
2: How high do you need to lift the load?
Do you foresee storage space becoming a problem in the future and need to be able to store goods at high levels? Is there a mezzanine or high level area you need to stack onto? On the flip side, what is the lowest doorway or beam you will need the Forklift to fit under and do you need Forklift with a small enough mast to fit into shipping containers?
3: Will you be using it indoors, outdoors, or both?
The surface areas of your worksite, will determine what types of Forklift and configuration you need. For example, high reach or reach forklifts will usually only be suitable for perfectly flat dry surfaces and indoor use.
Most standard, sit down (counter balance) forklifts are more flexible and can be used on flat to not so flat surfaces both indoors and outdoors. If your worksite has rough and unstable surfaces that need to be driven over, you may require 4×4 (all terrain type) Forklift.
The surface will also determine the type of tyres which are needed.
Forklifts which are used outdoors will need tyres with some sort of tread pattern to ensure they maintain grip in wet weather. Forklifts which are mostly used inside are commonly fitted with non marking type tyres as the standard tyres leave black marks and rubber on the surface.
Another factor which needs to be considered with indoor use is harmful exhaust fumes.
Of the four basic fuel types available in forklifts: Petrol, Diesel, Battery Electric & LPG, only the last two are suitable for indoor use. Petrol and Diesel engines produce poisonous exhaust fumes and aren’t suitable for use in confined spaces.
4: How much room do you have to manoeuvre? How wide are your narrowest aisles?
If the Forklift is mainly going to be used indoors, then manoeuvrability is a major consideration. (So are exhaust emissions!) How tightly does it turn? How much physical space does it occupy? Does your worksite require forklifts to be operated in confined areas where space for manoeuvring is limited?
Where pallet racking is used, do you require narrow aisles so that more racking bays and stock can be stored? Are there certain areas where a loaded Forklift may struggle to drive through?
5: How many hours per day will it be used?
How much usage your Forklift will get, greatly affects the age and fuel type of machine that’s recommended. If you will use a Forklift less than 4 hours a day, we recommend considering a second hand reconditioned Forklift. Here you can save 50% or more on the initial outlay.
For more than 4 hours a day new or leased forklifts can work out cheaper once maintenance and repairs are factored in. If you require a Forklift to run all day, everyday then LPG is usually the best option as empty bottles can quickly be changed.
6: Lease/rent or buy, New or Used?
Here the type of machine needed, the amount of use and your budget are the main deciding factors. Some forklifts require large initial outlays to purchase new yet can be rented for a fraction of the price. Business’s that require their forklifts to be used 24/7 usually find renting a much better option as servicing and maintenance costs are covered by the owner under most rent/lease agreements.
Other business’s where the forklifts get little use find it cheaper to buy a second hand Forklift outright instead of paying rent each week or month. Obviously new forklifts require less maintenance and are usually more reliable than older ones. They also have the advantage of dealership warrantee which is attractive to some buyers.

Overhead Guard - Are there broken welds, missing bolts, or damaged areas?
Hydraulic Cylinders - Is there leakage or damage on the lift, tilt, and attachment functions of the cylinders?
Mast Assembly - Are there broken welds, cracked or bent areas, and worn or missing stops?
Lift Chains and rollers
Is there wear or damage or kinks, signs of rust, or any sign that lubrication is required?
Is there squeaking?
Forks
Are they cracked or bent , worn, or mismatched?
Is there excessive oil or water on the forks?
Tires - What do the tires look like?
Are there large cuts that go around the circumference of the tire?
Are there large pieces of rubber missing or separated from the rim?
Are there missing lugs?
Is there bond separation that may cause slippage?
Battery Check
Are the cell caps and terminal covers in place?

Is there excessive free play?
If power steering, is the pump working?

If pedal goes all the way to the floor when you apply the service brake, that is the first indicator that the brakes are bad. Brakes should work in reverse, also.
Does the parking brake work? The truck should not be capable of movement when the parking brake is engaged.
Lights - If equipped with lights, are they working properly?
Horn - Does the horn work?
Safety seat - if the truck is equipped with a safety seat is it working?
Load Handling Attachments
Is there hesitation when hoisting or lowering the forks, when using the forward or backward tilt, or the lateral travel on the side shift?
Is there excessive oil on the cylinders?
Propane Tank - Is the tank guard bracket properly positioned and locked down?
Propane Hose
Is it damaged? It should not be frayed, pinched, kinked, or bound in any way.
Is the connector threaded on squarely and tightly?
Propane Odor - If you detect the presence of propane gas odor, turn off the tank valve and report the problem.
Engine Oil - Check levels.
Engine Coolant - Visually check the level. Note: Never remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level when the engine is running or while the engine is hot. Stand to the side and turn your face away. Always use a glove or rag to protect your hand.
Transmission Fluid - Check levels?
Windshield Wipers - Do they work properly?
Seat Belts - Do they work?
Safety Door - (found on stand up rider models) Is it in place?
Safety Switch - (found on stand up riding tow tractors) Is it working?
Hand guards - (found on stand up riding tow tractors, walking pallet trucks, walking transtackers) Are they in place?
Tow Hook
Does it engage and release smoothly?
Does the safety catch work properly?

The preceding checklists are intended to assist in providing training on OSHA's revised powered industrial truck operator standards. They are not a substitute for any of the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, or for any standards issued by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA wishes to acknowledge the UAW-Ford National Joint Committee on Health and Safety for granting permission to use the checklists and related graphics.
The revised OSHA standard for powered industrial truck training requires that an employer provide training to truck operators on a variety of topics. Among these topics are vehicle inspection and maintenance that the operator will be required to perform. The following checklists are being provided as part of OSHA's ongoing effort to assist employers and employees in ensuring that a safe and healthful workplace is provided. The lists serve as a guide only and may not be totally inclusive. Each type of powered industrial truck is unique and checklists pertinent to each type of vehicle should be modified accordingly. SAMPLE GENERIC CHECKLIST
FOR POWERED INDUSTRIAL TRUCKS
Overhead Guard - Are there broken welds, missing bolts, or damaged areas?
Hydraulic Cylinders - Is there leakage or damage on the lift, tilt, and attachment functions of the cylinders?
Mast Assembly - Are there broken welds, cracked or bent areas, and worn or missing stops?
Lift Chains and rollers
Is there wear or damage or kinks, signs of rust, or any sign that lubrication is required?
Is there squeaking?
Forks
Are they cracked or bent , worn, or mismatched?
Is there excessive oil or water on the forks?
Tires - What do the tires look like?
Are there large cuts that go around the circumference of the tire?
Are there large pieces of rubber missing or separated from the rim?
Are there missing lugs?
Is there bond separation that may cause slippage?
Battery Check
Are the cell caps and terminal covers in place?
Are the cables missing insulation?
Hydraulic Fluid - Check level?
Gauges - Are they all properly working?
Steering
Is there excessive free play?
If power steering, is the pump working?
Brakes
If pedal goes all the way to the floor when you apply the service brake, that is the first indicator that the brakes are bad. Brakes should work in reverse, also.
Does the parking brake work? The truck should not be capable of movement when the parking brake is engaged.
Lights - If equipped with lights, are they working properly?
Horn - Does the horn work?
Safety seat - if the truck is equipped with a safety seat is it working?
Load Handling Attachments
Is there hesitation when hoisting or lowering the forks, when using the forward or backward tilt, or the lateral travel on the side shift?
Is there excessive oil on the cylinders?
Propane Tank - Is the tank guard bracket properly positioned and locked down?
Propane Hose
Is it damaged? It should not be frayed, pinched, kinked, or bound in any way.
Is the connector threaded on squarely and tightly?
Propane Odor - If you detect the presence of propane gas odor, turn off the tank valve and report the problem.
Engine Oil - Check levels.
Engine Coolant - Visually check the level. Note: Never remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level when the engine is running or while the engine is hot. Stand to the side and turn your face away. Always use a glove or rag to protect your hand.
Transmission Fluid - Check levels?
Windshield Wipers - Do they work properly?
Seat Belts - Do they work?
Safety Door - (found on stand up rider models) Is it in place?
Safety Switch - (found on stand up riding tow tractors) Is it working?
Hand guards - (found on stand up riding tow tractors, walking pallet trucks, walking transtackers) Are they in place?
Tow Hook
Does it engage and release smoothly?
Does the safety catch work properly?
Control Lever - Does the lever operate properly?
Safety Interlock - (found on order pickers) If the gate is open, does the vehicle run?
Gripper Jaws - (found on order pickers) Do the jaws open and close quickly and smoothly?
Work Platform - (found on order pickers) Does the platform raise and lower smoothly?
The preceding checklists are intended to assist in providing training on OSHA's revised powered industrial truck operator standards. They are not a substitute for any of the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, or for any standards issued by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA wishes to acknowledge the UAW-Ford National Joint Committee on Health and Safety for granting permission to use the checklists and related graphics.
The revised OSHA standard for powered industrial truck training requires that an employer provide training to truck operators on a variety of topics. Among these topics are vehicle inspection and maintenance that the operator will be required to perform. The following checklists are being provided as part of OSHA's ongoing effort to assist employers and employees in ensuring that a safe and healthful workplace is provided. The lists serve as a guide only and may not be totally inclusive. Each type of powered industrial truck is unique and checklists pertinent to each type of vehicle should be modified accordingly. It is recommended that the manufacturer's instructions on vehicle maintenance and owner's and operator's responsibilities also be consulted. The OSHA standards for powered industrial trucks should be evaluated to ensure compliance.
